De ubervette 1965 Ford Mustang Hoonicorn RTR die we allemaal nog kennen uit de tofste gymkhana tot nu toe, heeft een upgrade gekregen. Niet dat het nodig was, maar Ken Block vond dat hij meer power nodig had en daarom produceert de Mustang nu 1.400pk en spuugt hij vuur.

En hoe krijg je makkelijk meer powerrrrrrr? Door een turbo, of twee op het motorblok te schroeven. En daarom vinden we op de 6,4 liter V8 die zonder turbo’s voor 840pk zorgde, nu ook twee gigantische turbo’s. Maar daarmee is het nog niet klaar. Dit monster moest ook nog op methanol gaan rijden, want zoals we allemaal weten verbrandt dat beter en betere verbranding betekent nog meer pk’s. Door deze aanpassingen komen we op een totaal van 1.400 paardenkrachten op de aandrijfas. Vanuit daar wordt het naar alle vier de wielen gestuurd.

Om het af te maken is de paintjob ook nog aangepast naar een die meer lijkt op degene die we al eerder zagen op de Ford Escort Mk2 van Ken. Het stars and stripes patroon is terug te vinden in de speciale reflectieve verf die al eerder gebruikt is op Blocks Ford Focus RX. En dat maakt het cirkeltje helemaal rond.  

Ondanks dat meneer Block in zijn broek kakt van de nieuwe Hoonicorn, heeft hij er ook nog wat over te vertellen.

“We got approval for a new video concept using the Hoonicorn, but I needed more power for what I needed it to do. So, I developed the concept for the general idea of what I wanted— two turbos sticking out the hood—and handed that over to my team. They came back with a functional way to make that happen and added methanol to get the setup to produce the power that I wanted. We ended up with 1,400 horsepower! Ha, so they may have over delivered a bit—and I’m happy about that!

When I say that this is the absolute most frightening thing I’ve ever driven, I’m not exaggerating. AT ALL. The motor revs and spins my Toyo tires to destruction so quickly that I can’t change the gears fast enough. It’s genuinely a mind-numbing, crazy experience to try to drive this thing. It’s amazing.”
